Which Polo Cologne is Right for You?

Designer Ralph Lauren began his career working for famed fashion juggernaut Beau Brummel in 1967. While today, Lauren’s name is attached to many different product lines and design types, his first project was designing men’s neckties. His creativity and ambition led him to convince the manufacturer to allow him to start his line, which he called “Polo” after his interest in sports. While originally he worked out of a single drawer in the company’s Empire State Building headquarters, the Polo line drew on Lauren’s athletic passions and Old Hollywood design interests.

One year after launching his line of neckties, Lauren launched his first full menswear collection in 1968. Featuring dress shirts cut in athletic fabrics, the collection was an overnight success and led to the very first solo designer boutique in Bloomingdale’s: The Polo Shop by Ralph Lauren. Through innovation and brilliant design choices, Polo’s popularity continued to spread throughout the U.S. and abroad.

In 1978, the first Ralph Lauren fragrances were launched at Bloomingdale's: Lauren for women, and Polo the men's cologne. This was the first time that a designer introduced two fragrances – one for men and one for women – simultaneously. By 1981, these fragrances had gone international, with television ads and prominent placement in many Hollywood movies helping raise the brand’s profile and catch people’s attention.

Today, Ralph Lauren’s empire continues to stand strong, with clothing brands at every level of the market and high-profile sports sponsorships ensuring that the brand remains well within the public eye. Ralph Lauren is the official outfitter for the U.S. Open, the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Olympic Team’s parade dress. The brand’s designs are united by their classic, sporty lines and the strong impression of athleticism they give off.

With nearly a hundred fragrance options in the brand’s storied history, there are a lot of options to choose from! Each of Ralph Lauren’s scents is fresh and exciting, and we’re here to help you choose just the right signature Ralph Lauren Polo cologne for men that is right for you.

Polo Blue for Men by Ralph Lauren

Polo Blue cologne for Men is the right cologne for you if you’re trendy and modern. Featuring bright citrus and cucumber notes backed with a mossy base, Polo Blue for Men is refreshing and aquatic. Launched in 2002, the fragrance is notably breezy and casual– it can be worn anywhere and anytime. It’s a playful scent for somebody who doesn’t take themselves too seriously and wears very well in the summer.

Polo Blue Sport for Men by Ralph Lauren

Polo Blue Sport is the right cologne for you if you’re sporty and energetic. Since 2012, Polo Blue Sport for Men has been delighting noses and invigorating its wearers all over the world. It’s fresh and sharp, but not overwhelming. Its fruity notes cut through its sharp herbals for a scent that wears well in the boardroom or on the links. Fresh with just a hint of sweetness, perfect for the modern man who enjoys the sporting life.

Polo Deep Blue for Men by Ralph Lauren

Polo Deep Blue for Men is the right cologne for you if you’re sophisticated. Launched in 2020, the newest member of the Polo Blue family is highly aromatic and complex. It’s an aquatic offering, with bright citrus and ocean notes bringing the sea breezes through to this long-wearing cologne. The sweet floral middle notes play well with the fruity top notes to capture a day at the beach in a bottle.

Polo Black for Men by Ralph Lauren

Polo Black cologne for Men is the right cologne for you if you’re versatile. This shape-changer of a scent performs differently in cool weather versus warm weather, with different notes emerging as the cologne reacts to your skin’s chemistry. Its blend of warm woods and fresh citrus makes Polo Black by Ralph Lauren a unique standout with a fresh, aromatic scent.

Polo Red for Men by Ralph Lauren

Polo Red cologne for Men is the right cologne for you if you’re active and dynamic. This energizing scent leans heavily on bold citrus and strong herbs, while the ferocity of the scent is supported in the base by the powerful fragrance of coffee beans. And while the cologne comes in a brilliant scarlet bottle, the red theming doesn’t stop with the packaging. “Red” is an underlying theme in the ingredients of Polo Red for Men, which center around a woody-spicy composition and give the scent strength, masculinity, and a strong character.

Polo Red Rush for Men by Ralph Lauren

Polo Red Rush for Men is the right cologne for you if you’re surprising. You might think at first that Polo Red Rush for Men is a simple variant of Polo Red, but the middle notes lead to something entirely unexpected. It opens similarly to its older brother, Polo Red for Men, but instead of leaning into the sharp citrus notes, Red Rush is emboldened by heart notes of mint and red apple. Red Rush really comes into its own after its opening, as the scent develops into something a bit more green and expansive than you might expect from its bold, brash opening.

Safari for Men by Ralph Lauren

Safari for Men is the right cologne for you if you’re wild. Ralph Lauren’s first entanglement with the safari aesthetic came about in 1984, with the launch of the brand’s first home goods collection and the signature Safari for Women scent. In 1992, Safari for Men launched as a followup to Safari for Women’s popularity, and the fragrance continues to be popular due to its strong outdoorsy appeal. A heady rush of herbal fragrances is swept up with aldehydes and backed by forest scents for the impression of hot, windswept grasslands and the wilds of the African veldt.

Polo for Men by Ralph Lauren

Polo for Men is the right cologne for you if you’re traditional. The original Ralph Lauren fragrance, created in 1978, Polo for Men remains a classic, evergreen scent favored by men for formal and evening wear. The opening notes are green and fresh, a theme carried throughout the cologne. Grassy scents give way to deeper notes of patchouli and moss, while crisp forest notes breathe through at every level of the fragrance.
